The Daily Choice of Life
God’s call to choose life demands intentional alignment with His Word. Each decision becomes a step toward His promises, anchored in His unchanging truth.
Today's Scripture
I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil... that thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest choose life. (Deuteronomy 30:19-20)
Reflection
Moses’ charge to the Israelites echoes through time, challenging us to confront the gravity of our daily choices. To 'choose life' is not a passive state but an active, conscious decision to align our hearts and actions with God’s commands. This begins with recognizing that life—true life—only flows from obeying Him, not from pursuing our own wisdom or desires (Deut. 5:33). The crossroads of every day are opportunities to affirm our trust in His sovereignty.
Choosing life requires daily vigilance against the seduction of autonomy. Satan’s curse brought death into creation, yet God offers a path of renewal to those who cling to His Word (Genesis 2:17; 3:24). This doesn’t mean our decisions will eliminate hardship, but they will root us in His purposes. For instance, when faced with temptation, choosing to walk away in obedience (1 Corinthians 6:18) or when confronting conflict, choosing peace over pride (Matthew 5:9) becomes a tangible expression of faith.
The 'choice of life' also manifests in small, consistent acts of dependence on God. Just as a farmer must daily till the soil to reap a harvest (Galatians 6:7-9), we cultivate spiritual fruit by daily surrender. Morning devotion, prayer, and Scripture reading are not rituals but deliberate acts of choosing life. Each moment we reject shortcuts or compromises, we build a life that honors Him and reflects His character to a watching world (Matthew 5:16).
Ultimately, this choice is empowered by Christ’s finished work. The Holy Spirit gives us discernment to distinguish between God’s voice and the noise of a dying world (John 16:13). When decisions feel overwhelming, we can look to the cross and recognize that Christ has already chosen death for us, so we might live (2 Corinthians 5:15). Let us daily declare, 'The Lord is my light and my salvation' (Psalm 27:1), trusting that His way is life, full of purpose and grace.

Father, thank You for giving me the gift of choice. Strengthen my will to align my decisions with Your Word. Help me see the gravity of every moment and the power of obedience. Guide my steps today, that my life might be a testimony to Your goodness. May my choices reflect the love and wisdom of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
