Healing from the Hands of a Bronze Serpent
When Israel grumbled against God in the wilderness, He sent fiery serpents to bite them. Yet the cure He provided—a bronze serpent lifted on a pole—defied logic. Healing came not through magic but through faith in God’s exact instructions, inviting us to trust His methods even when they confound our expectations.

And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. (Numbers 21:8-9)
Reflection
The Israelites faced a paradox: their punishment (serpent bites) required a remedy (a bronze serpent) that seemed to mock reason. God’s solution demanded they abandon their assumptions and fix their gaze on a man-made object as a symbol of His mercy. This mirrors how God often answers our crises not with what we expect but with what we must obey. Healing begins when we surrender our need for control and embrace His divine logic.
Obedience is the bridge between God’s promises and our reality. The bronze serpent was ineffective unless gazed upon in faith. Similarly, our struggles—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—require us to anchor ourselves in His Word, even when His timing or method feels delayed or strange. When we act on His commands, we testify that His wisdom transcends our limited understanding.
God’s simplicity often humbles our intellect. A lifeless statue becoming a vehicle of life seems absurd to human reasoning, yet it underscores that salvation is God’s work, not ours. Our role is to trust His character: that He is both just and merciful, that He punishes sin but provides a way to escape its sting. Letting go of our need to ‘fix’ things opens the door for His supernatural intervention.
This story challenges us to reexamine our ‘faith barriers.’ Do we dismiss God’s answers because they lack grandeur or align with our strategies? The serpent on the pole was a humble, even offensive symbol (Numbers 21:9). Yet it worked for all who looked. Let us examine areas where we’re clinging to our own plans, and ask God to show us the ‘poles’ He wants us to lift—His ways, not our own.

Heavenly Father, forgive me when I doubt Your unconventional methods. Teach me to look to You with childlike faith, trusting that Your wisdom is perfect. Give me courage to obey Your commands even when they seem illogical, and help me see Your healing power at work in the most unexpected ways. May my life reflect Your grace, 2023.
